You can't beat the basic troubleshooting list for helping market your powder bulk process equipment. This post was published as a discussion on the SWECO: Screeners, Sifters and Separators LinkedIn Group. A list of basic screening application problems, causes and solutions. 

Problem: Off-spec end product, too many oversize particles 
• Cause: Screen opening to large; Solution: Select a screen with a smaller opening. 
• Cause: Hole or tear in screen; Solution: Replace screen. 
• Cause: Material bypass; Solutions: Check seals and gaskets. Use a pretensioned screen. 

Problem: Off-spec end product, too many fines 
• Cause: Screen opening too small; Solution: Select a screen with a larger opening. 
• Cause: Severely blinded screen; Solution: See “Screen Blinding” problem below. 
• Cause: Screen overloaded; Solution: Reduce federate. 

Problem: Low product yield from a multiple-deck screener 
• Cause: Upper screen blinded; Solution: See “Screen Blinding” problem below. 
•Cause: Upper screen opening too small; Solution: Select an upper screen with a larger opening. 
• Cause: Lower screen failed; Solution: Check lower screen for holes or tears. 
• Cause: Lower screen opening too large; Solution: Select a lower screen with a smaller opening. 

Problem: Screen blinding 
• Cause: Wire diameter too heavy; Solution: Select a screen with a lighter wire diameter. 
• Cause: Worn sliders or balls; Solution: Check anti-blinding devices and replace them as needed. 
• Cause: Screen blocked with material; Solution: Clean or replace screen. 
• Cause: Screen overloaded; Solution: Reduce feedrate. 

Problem: Short screen life 
• Cause: Wire diameter too light; Solution: Select a screen with a heavier wire diameter. Use a backup screen. Add screen supports. 
• Cause: Improper handling; Solution: Be careful not to crease or dent screens during handling or installation. 
• Cause: Screen overloaded; Solution: Reduce feedrate. 
• Cause: Screen corroded; Solution: Instead of stainless steel wire mesh, try alternative alloys or use a screen made of a synthetic material.
